TRWA is dedicated to protecting resources in the 562 square miles of the
Taunton River watershed, the second largest in Massachusetts. We seek to involve
citizens of the basin's 38 cities and towns in a grassroots effort to shield the
watershed's rivers and streams, lakes and ponds, wetlands and forests from the
effects of rapid , poorly planned development.
Our water quality monitoring, land protection, advocacy, and education
programs seek to protect outstanding environmental values, including:
- 221 lakes and ponds
- 173 canoeable river miles
- 27 different habitat types
- the 16,800-acre Hockomock Swamp, the largest remaining wetland in
Massachusetts
- the Assawompsett Ponds, headwaters of the Nemasket River and the largest
natural lakes in Massachusetts
- 29 species of native fish, including native brook trout and the very rare
Atlantic sturgeon
- the state's largest alewife run, on the Nemasket River
- 7 species of freshwater mussels
- 114 species of birds, including bald eagles.
It's a big job for a small group. We need your help. Become a member today
and volunteer to protect the beauty and character of Southeastern Massachussetts.
